Be it...

In a month's time, we'll say goodbye to 2009 and wave our hands to 2010. I like to make new years' resolution and it's the same every year - finish reading the whole Bible. The motives are good, I want to go deeper with the Lord and further equipped myself with His knowledge. I was so determined and got myself some year-plan Bible reading materials and a notebook, open my Bible every morning, drop down some notes then ticked off the box. This routine would continue for a few months until I found myself reading my Bible out of duty, ticked the box for the sake of it, finding different excuses not to and being caught up with the busyness of life. Eventually I would give up, before you know it, the end of the year is at the corner and I'd feel incredibly bad that I failed to achieve this resolution again...

So in order to make myself feel better, I've decided not to make the same resolution in 2009, my resolution is simple to BE all that the Lord has called me to be, serve Him wholeheartedly and enjoy this journey with Him. I remember a pastor once told me that we are called to be human being, not human doing. Most of the devoted Christian have a mindset of "doing", they feel like they need to do everything for the Lord to show Him their love so they would attend every Bible studies, every big Christian conferences, every church services and serve at every ministries etc. But the Lord has spoke to me many times about this with the story of "Mary and Martha" in Luke 10:38-42. The Lord does not merely look at what you do, He loves you just as you are, not what you can do for Him, He wants to spend time with you! He is more interested in developing you as a person than developing your skills as a worker. I know I have the tendency of 'over-doing', I love sharing life with people, serving, keeping myself busy with different activities and commitments, being so caught up with "things" that I have forgotten what the most important thing in life is. The Lord would bring me back to this story and ask who I think is more blessed?

Martha was running around like a chicken with no head, doing her best to prepare everything for dinner and her sister Mary just sat and chilled with the Lord. I would be so upset at Mary if I were Martha, how could she not see that I need help and just sat there and hung out with the Lord?!! Yet the Lord said to Martha, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." It's so easy to be caught up with work, family, friends, relationships, commitments, entertainment or even ministries, well I'm not saying that these things are not good or important but I believe spending quality time with the Lord is far more precious than anything in this world.

The Lord cares more about us being His precious sons and daughters, claiming our royal identities, not be shaken or distracted by the things of the world and not to lose that intimacy that He longs to have with each one of us.

This is the first year for me to achieve new year resolution =)

"School of Stylist" promotion at Megabox

First time being on stage and do my thing in front of the audiences at Megabox on last Saturday for "School of Stylist" promotion for YO-HK. I was quite nervous for the whole week, although I have had some stage experience but it was limited to dance and drama.

Since we had limited time getting all the clothes, shoes and accessories ready for the models, I was rushing back and forth at men's and women's sections trying to put together 4 different outfits for our models, I was running around in heels like a mad woman hahahaha...

Then I was busy preparing all the answers in my head for the stylist Q&A section but thankfully Devily and I had great partnership. It was fun chit-chatting on stage about styling, beauty, makeup and anything! And I was so happy to have Julie as one of the guest singers, you did a great job girl!

I was a bit nervous at the makeup demonstration section because I have never had so many cameras in front of me while I'm working. I also need to explain all the makeup terms, procedures and answer questions while I'm putting makeup on the models. Thank God, It turned out to alright. =)

Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity YO-HK! You guys are awesome and I had some much fun with you all!

Check out videos and pictures here -- YO-HK.com

Do you know what love is?

This is a question a lot of people would ask but don't have an answer for.

What is love? Is it the sacrificial love between mothers, children and siblings? Is it the piercing take-my-breath-away love between lovers? Is it the covenantal love between best friends? Or is it the love that is so amazing, so divine that no one on this earth has experienced the fullness of it yet...

For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son, for whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

If you want to know more, listen to "LOVE" is a movement by the awesome preacher/pastor/rapper Jaeson Ma, MV directed and compiled by the talented Hosanna Wong. JMA's first digital single will be released on September 1st, 2009 on itunes.

Take this love with you...

F for...

According to dictionary.com fashion is

1) a prevailing custom or style of dress, etiquette, socializing

2) a manner, a way, a kind

3) the make or form of anything

Guess who created Fashion? It all began with Adam and Eve came to realization they were naked after they ate the forbidden fruit so the LORD God made garments of skin and clothed them. God created the first piece of clothing!

Fashion is a positive word and it changes constantly. It can be found in a t-shirt, a dress, a pair of heels, a song, a film, a phone, a life style, a thought or a dream. It is a creation, an art, an expressive, an inspiration, an interpretation and a conception. It gives you unlimited space of imagination and creativity. It is something that you need to chase after or else it'll be gone in the blink of an eye.

While I was searching for inspiration for my next project, I remember a video I saw a while back. As the underdog in England and finally getting some noise in Paris, it was pretty smart for Gareth Pugh to use it for his show in Paris Fashion week when everyone was expecting to see a runway show. Which leads me to think about risks taking can save you or kill you...but would you rather sit there, wait and wonder or would you take a step forward, go for it and get the experience.

I'm not very good at taking risks but I keep reminding myself that it's like faith, you need to take one step at a time in order for it to grow. Fashion and Faith have similarities. They're both from the Lord, both involve risks taking, something you need to chase after, something that drive you, inspire you, energize you, something you think you don't need but you can't live without, something you don't know how to deal with but you just have to keep trying.

Faith is like fashion, there are different seasons, ups and downs, likes and dislikes. You may be struggling now but tomorrow will be a better day. If 80s is not your cup of tea for this coming fall, you can either be a biker chick, be glamorous, wear your underwear outside or wait till the return of spring!

Fashion for charity

Sheena Matheiken was born and raised in Indian and now based in New York. She has committed to wearing only one dress for the whole year starting from May 2009.

By doing so, one US dollar will be donated to Akanksha's school project per day in order to reach $365 dollars by the end of the year to support a whole school year of a child in slums of India. Seven identical dresses were created for this purpose and to be worn all year round. Quite a lot of thoughts and effort have been put into this uniform that has very simple design but can be worn both ways, front and back and also as a jacket.

With the help of different kinds of vintage accessories, hats, belts, shoes and designers pieces, she has created 84 looks untill today. Some of the looks are charming and cute but some are questionable...However, it's the though that counts! Sacrificing fashion for a good cost, I'm inspirited by her guts and determination!

Something new everyday

Check out my new card!

The design doesn't look as good since I'm using a crappy scanner but I love it =) It's simple, chic and have my name embossed on the paper to add texture to a card, it's great!

Phone number is erased for security reason but feel free to drop me a line if you need help with styling or makeup.

My first Chinese styling article was released on Yo-HK yesterday. Please excuse my Chinese because it's getting a little rusty but I'm getting there hahaha...

Tights or not too tights...

The good news is --- it is still the item to-have for this fall so you don't have to throw away yours from last winter just yet.

Instead of the classic black one, try neon, printed, beaded, embellished, even those with leather patches for your closet collections. I am not a big fan of embellished one since it has the tenancy of making my legs look thicker than they are. However, I found this interesting blog which teaches you how to create your own, maybe I'll get some laces later...

Before you go all out with those tights, make sure you match them with your outfit - For neon one, stick to one or max 2 colors for your overall look, for complicated printed tights, avoid heavy prints or too much layers on the top. And if you want your legs not to look thicker than they are, get the simple prints and little embellishment one and avoid crazy color like pink or yellow.

The secrets of getting the perfect tan!

I love summer and I love tanning! I know a lot of people want to find out how to get that beautiful shinny honey bronze on their skin, it's not that hard! Here are some tips for you:

1. Exfoliate Your Body

Before you hit to the pool or the beach, exfoliate your body to get rid of all the dead skin cells. If not, your skin will most likely looking dull and dry after tanning.

- Gently rub any body scrub (DIY- mix honey with sugar) on your body in circular movement from your feet up to your neck. It will also help with the blood circulation.

- Keep your skin moisturized by applying lotion after you shower or before you go to bed.

- Try not to exfoliate your body the night before you go the beach cuz your skin tends to be more vulnerable under sun damage. Exfoliate a day or two before.

2. Hair...hello?!

Shave the night before so the salt water won’t irritate your skin.

Check before you leave the door, you don’t want unnecessary exposure of any unwanted hair! Don’t forget your armpits and bikini zone.

3. Beautiful are the feet who bring good news

- Scrub off the dead dry skin on your feet with a foot scrub, try doing it everyday in the shower

- Get a pedicure at home or at a nail salon.

- Put nail polish on your toes that matches your skin.

4. Get the right Bikini

Buy a bikini that fits you well.

- Check in the mirror a few times to make sure nothing is hanging out the sides. Try to sit, squat, bow, turn, jump etc to see if anything flashes...

- Pair up with flip flops that match your bikini.

5. Sunscreen

- Use different sunscreen for your face and your body.

- Put on waterproof sunscreen 15 minutes before you head out.

- Use at least SPF15 to protect your skin against the sun damage.

- Reapply at least every 2 hours or whenever needed. Don’t use any dark tanning lotion/oil with no SPF protection alone, you should put SPF15 sunscreen on first then apply dark tanning lotion/oil on the top.

- Or use dark tanning lotion/oil that has SPF15 protection.

6. Be smart with the sun

According to Hong Kong Cancer Fund, the danger sun hours is 11am to 4pm.

Try to avoid direct exposure under the sun when it's the strongest. I usually go after 1pm =).

7. Water

Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

8. After sun care

Put a bottle of aloe vera gel in the fridge or any after sun lotion and spread it over your body after shower. It will moisturize your skin so it won't look so dry and your tan will last longer.

Alright now you're ready! Happy tanning!

Tips on beautiful skin part 3 - How to take better care of your skin

「世界上無醜的女人 , 只有懶惰的女人 。」" "There’re no ulgy women, just lazy one.”

It's so true! If you eat healthy, exercise regularly, rest, use the right product for your skin, spend at least 10 to 15mins cleaning and moisturizing your face and do facial every week (DIY), I can guarantee that your skin would look great and you would feel great!

What are the steps for healthier and better looking skin?

1) Cleaning is the KEY

You must remove your makeup before you go to bed. No matter how tried, drunk, lazy or whatever you are...Make sure you use makeup remover, rinse your face with face wash and wipe your face gently with toner to remove the possible remaining chemical. Our pores will open at night so it’s very important to clean the junk off our face so they won’t clog our pores. When you dry your face with a towel, DON'T rub, dab gently.

2) Use the right stuff for your skin

Normal Skin – Use gentle face wash, tone with non-alcoholic toner, moisturizing daily with lotion that is for normal skin type. Keep using regular deep cleansing mask once a week and hydration mask once a week.

Oily Skin – Use face wash specifically formulated for oily skin. Try not to wash your face more than 2 or 3 times a day. Use non-alcoholic toner then moisturize your face with hydration gel or serum, avoid creamy type. Use deep cleansing mask at least 2 times a week followed by hydration mask, you can also try masks that’s specifically designed for pimples.

Dry Skin – Use gentle face wash formulated for dry skin, you can try milk type, esp. during winter. Use non-alcoholic toner then moisturize your face with lotion. Use deep cleansing mask no more that once a week and hydration mask up to 3, 4 times a week.

Sensitive Skin – You have to be very careful with what you put on your face. Try to use fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products. Wear sunscreen and avoid being under the sun for too long. Use gentle face wash, toner and moisturize with organic or no chemical ingredients lotion.

Combination Skin – You will need to use a special cleanser that will help balance the excessive oil and dryness on your face. Try to use products that are designed for combination skin instead of mixing and matching products for dry and oily skin. Use non-alcoholic toner and moisturizes with light, non-pore-blocking lotion. Use deep cleansing mask at least 2 times a week and hydration mask.

3) Drink at least 8 ounces of water daily

4) Exercise – It is essential in developing and maintaining healthy skin with any skin type. Exercise at least 2 to 3 times per week.

5) Relax and Rest - Ideal bed time 11pm to 3am

6) Fruits and Veg – at least 5 potions (handful) per day to gain essential nutrients, including vitamin C, folate and other B vitamins, provitamin A and other carotenoids, iron, calcium, potassium and dietary fibre.

The Haute Couture World

Haute Couture fascinates me, it is an excellent artistry with the fashioning of garments. A couture garment is at the top level of hand customized fashion design and clothing construction made by a couture design house. It is made specifically for the wearer's measurements and body stance and are virtually made by hand, carefully interlined, stay taped and fitted to perfection for each client. Since it is made from scratch for each client, it typically requires three fittings. It usually takes from 100 to 400 hours to make one dress.

Two of the most legendary couture designers of the world were Coco Chanel and Christian Dior. I, however, can never take my eyes off Valentino's red collection "rosso Valentino", he is always going to be my favorite!

Tips on beautiful skin part 2 - Find out your skin type

In order to have beautiful skin, you have to first find out which skin type you have so you would be able to learn to care for it better.

There are 5 basic skin types:

1) Normal Skin

smooth texture, looks fresh and clean, no enlarged pores, feels vibrant, good elasticity, no visible blackheads or blemishes

2) Oily Skin

feels very greasy, thick texture, tends to have blackheads, blemishes, prone to pimples, enlarged pores, looks shiny but less easy to get winkles

3) Dry Skin

very thin texture, tendency towards fine lines at early age, flaking, red patches, may looks ashy or dull from dead skin buildup

4) Sensitive Skin

skin is thin, fine texture, easily irritated, tends to be dry, delicate and prone to allergic reactions, reacts quickly to both heat and cold, occasional break out in spots

5) Combination Skin

a blend of oily and dry skin, the T-zone from the forehead down to the nose and chin is oily while the cheeks are dry, enlarged pores and blackheads on T-zone
